Why Goodyear, Arizona is Great for Retirement

Stuart Mason

As we’ve covered previously on the Sunbound Blog Phoenix, Arizona is one of the best cities in the entire country for retirement. One of the many amazing things about retiring in Phoenix is that while it is known as a single large city - in fact Phoenix is considered the fifth largest city in the entire country - it is actually a collection of a lot of smaller towns. New residents love exploring all of these areas given each town has its own unique feel and offer its own set of amazing amenities and entertainment options. But while you may have heard of some of the bigger cities like Glendale, Scottsdale, or Tempe that make up the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, there are a ton of amazing places to call home in Phoenix. One of our favorites is the small town of Goodyear, Arizona, located in the southwestern suburbs of Phoenix.

Fun History and a Booming Present

Although there are plenty of good reasons to move to Goodyear, Arizona today, we do love that the town has a bit of a fun history. As you probably guessed from the name, Goodyear, Arizona is named after Charles Goodyear, founder of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. The town was first established in 1917 following the purchase of 16,000 acres of land by Goodyear in order to grow cotton for vehicle tire cords. Following this early history, however, the town remained fairly small until the 1990s when residential development caused the town to quickly grow. In fact, between 1990 and 2000 Goodyear, Arizona was the third fastest growing city in all of Arizona. This strong growth continues to this day, as Goodyear remains one of the most popular areas in Phoenix in which to buy a home.

If the town's name sounds familiar, that is because Goodyear, Arizona is named after the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.

Convenient Location

Another great thing about retiring to Goodyear, Arizona is its convenient location in the southwestern suburbs of Phoenix. Because Phoenix is one of the best places to retire in the entire country, living in Goodyear gives you access to all the things that make Phoenix great for retirement: warm weather, low taxes, and a great cost of living. But Goodyear also provides particular benefits to retirees. By being on the smaller side, Goodyear provides a quieter lifestyle than an area like Scottsdale or Tempe, while still being just a short drive away from all that these towns have to offer. Many retirees we’ve talked to who have moved to Goodyear have loved this balance - getting to enjoy quiet times at home while still being near all the shopping, entertainment, and dining in the rest of greater Phoenix. Finally, while there are certainly a ton of amazing activities in Goodyear to keep you entertained, another great thing about the town’s location is that it’s located near the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. If you think that travel is going to be a big part of your retirement, living in Goodyear makes it easy to quickly jet set to all your favorite travel destinations (not to mention that it makes it that much easier for people to visit you!).

Opportunities for Adventure

While one benefit of living in Goodyear, Arizona is certainly its proximity to everything that makes the Phoenix metropolitan area so great, the city of Goodyear itself has many amazing features for retirees.

First, Goodyear, Arizona features plenty of new shopping areas and restaurants that are sure to have everything you’re looking for. Along with this wide range of dining and shopping options, Goodyear also features plenty of great entertainment options. If you’re a sports fan, you’ll love knowing that Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians, Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago White Sox have their spring training facilities nearby. Additionally, Goodyear is known for having some amazing golf courses, including the Estrella Mountain Ranch Golf Club, which was designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus.

If you love Major League Baseball, you'll love living near where so many teams have their spring training facilities.

Another amazing thing about living in Goodyear is being able to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities in Arizona’s beautiful sunny climate. Arizona’s warm, dry heat means that you can enjoy activities like hiking or bicycling year round. For nature fans there’s easy access by car to Arizona’s beautiful outdoors like the nearby Estrella Mountain Range where you can enjoy a multitude of beautiful desert hikes through the Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Another local favorite is the White Tank Mountain Regional Park, offering breathtaking views and serving as a gorgeous backdrop to the town itself.

If you’re a fan of nature, but want to experience it in a slightly more relaxed fashion, then you’re in luck because Goodyear is also close to the Wildlife World Zoo. Suffice it to say, you’ll never run out of options for getting out and about if you move to Goodyear, Arizona.

Great Living Options

As one of the fastest growing areas in Phoenix in the past two decades, Goodyear is full of amazing, newly built homes. This includes not only a wide range of amazing new residential neighborhoods, but also master-planned communities built by some of the country’s biggest and most reputable home builders. In fact, Goodyear, Arizona is home to some amazing adult communities, including both active adult communities and senior living facilities offering both independent and managed care living.
