What is geriatrics?

Manny Cominsky

Geriatrics is a medical specialty that focuses on providing high-quality, patient-centered care for older adults. As we age, our bodies undergo various physiological changes, and our healthcare needs evolve. Geriatric clinicians are specifically trained to address the unique issues and concerns that older adults may face. They have the expertise to navigate the complexities of illnesses, diseases, and medications that can affect older individuals differently than younger adults. The goal of geriatrics is to prevent and manage these conditions, while also developing personalized care plans that cater to the special health needs of older adults.

The Need for Geriatric Care

As we grow older, our health can become more complex and it’s at this point that the expertise of a geriatrician becomes invaluable. Similar to how pediatricians specialize in caring for children, geriatricians specialize in caring for older adults. They understand the physiological changes that occur with aging and are trained to recognize and treat conditions that are unique to this population. Geriatricians provide not only medical care but also resources and educational materials to help older adults maintain healthy and fulfilling lives.

When to Consider Seeing a Geriatrician

There is no specific age requirement to see a geriatrician, but most patients who benefit from their services are typically 75 years of age or older. However, any older individuals who experience chronic illnesses, impaired physical function, memory or cognitive impairments, depression or anxiety, weight loss, balance problems, recurrent falls, or urinary incontinence can also benefit from the specialized care provided by geriatricians. If a medical condition causes considerable impairment and frailty, if the list of prescription medications becomes overwhelming, or if family members and caregivers feel significant stress, it may be time to seek the expertise of a geriatrician.

Common Medical Problems in Older Adults

Geriatric healthcare professionals often encounter certain medical problems that are prevalent among older adults. These conditions require specialized attention and management. Some of the most common medical problems seen in older adults include:

Dementia and memory loss

Dementia is a gradual decline in cognitive function, resulting in symptoms such as memory loss, impaired judgment, confusion, and disorientation. Alzheimer's disease is the most prevalent form of dementia, often diagnosed in individuals over the age of 65. Managing dementia requires a comprehensive approach that includes mental stimulation, exercise, and a balanced diet.

Falls

Falls are a significant concern among older adults, as they can lead to disability and even death. More than one-third of individuals over the age of 65 experience at least one fall each year. Preventing falls and managing the injuries sustained from falls are essential aspects of geriatric care.

Coordination and Mobility Issues

Geriatric care encompasses addressing impairments in coordination, mobility, and gait. These issues can significantly impact an older adult's functional independence and quality of life, in particular by reducing the risk of falls. Physical therapists and occupational therapists play a crucial role in helping older adults improve their mobility and maintain their ability to perform daily activities.

Mental Health Conditions

Depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions are common among older adults. Geriatric psychiatrists and psychologists specialize in diagnosing and treating these conditions, providing essential support to older adults in maintaining their mental well-being.

Cardiovascular Disease

Coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions are leading causes of morbidity and mortality among older adults. Geriatricians are well-equipped to manage these conditions, considering the unique needs and considerations of older individuals.

Geriatrics: A Team Approach to Care

Geriatric care is a collaborative effort, involving a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. This team will often include:

Geriatricians

Geriatricians are doctors with specialized training in evaluating and managing the healthcare needs of older adults. They have additional certification in geriatrics and can provide comprehensive care for frail and medically complex older individuals across various healthcare settings.

Geriatric Nurse Practitioners

Geriatric nurse practitioners have advanced training and certification in caring for older adults. They can perform physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, and prescribe medications. Geriatric nurse practitioners work in diverse healthcare settings, including medical and long-term care facilities.

Physician Assistants

Physician assistants are licensed medical professionals who practice medicine under the supervision of physicians. They play a vital role in the geriatric care team, supporting physicians and other healthcare professionals in providing comprehensive care to older adults.

Social Workers

Social workers are licensed professionals who assist individuals in dealing with various aspects of their lives, including mental and physical health problems. Geriatric social workers specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health issues specific to older adults.

Consultant Pharmacists

Consultant pharmacists specialize in prescribing medications for older adults, considering their unique health needs and potential interactions between medications.

Dietitians

Dietitians are experts in the role of nutrition in health. They provide guidance and recommendations on dietary choices to maintain optimal health or manage specific health conditions.

Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists

Physical and occupational therapists help older adults improve their mobility, strength, and ability to perform daily activities. They play a crucial role in rehabilitation and fall prevention.

Speech and Hearing Specialists

Speech and hearing specialists focus on addressing speech, language, hearing, and swallowing difficulties in older adults. They play a key role in managing conditions such as Parkinson's disease and strokes.

Psychiatrists and Psychologists

Geriatric psychiatrists and psychologists specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions specific to older adults. They provide therapy, counseling, and medication management when necessary.

The collaborative efforts of these healthcare professionals ensure that older adults receive comprehensive care that addresses their unique healthcare needs.

Geriatrics is a specialized medical field dedicated to providing high-quality, patient-centered care for older adults. Geriatric healthcare professionals possess the knowledge and expertise to address the unique challenges faced by older individuals. By adopting a team-based approach and collaborating with various healthcare professionals, geriatricians ensure that older adults receive comprehensive care that promotes their health, independence, and overall well-being. If you or someone you know could benefit from the specialized care provided by geriatricians, consider seeking their expertise to navigate the complexities of aging and maintain a healthy and fulfilling life.
